What is bravehound.com anyway?Years ago, I started this site as a moblog - an online photo journal made of camera phone pics. That stream of photos is still going strong, and it’s become a fun way to look back at times over recent years. I’ve actually never owned a normal digital camera.
The site has also become place for me to share my house mixes, which has been a really positive experience, even though it’s just a little hobby of mine. I’ve met lots of great individuals from all over the world, all because of me sharing a little creativity. I’m pretty darn flattered when someone enjoys what I post enough to stop me and tell me.
Also, the site has become an outlet for me to express all my nerdy interests…. with following the mobile industry being on in the font of the pack. And when I get my hands on a hot new high-end device, I’m sure to review it thoroughly and share my thoughts with readers.
What’s your story?
I was born and raised in Missoula, Montana. I moved off to Seattle after high school to go to the University of Washington. Lots happened for me that first year away - I came out, studied hard and worked a couple jobs in order to “make it.”
I took a Summer job at a tech startup during the dot com boom - and I work for that company today. What started as just a gopher job, has allowed me to prove my worth and has evolved into an amazing creative outlet. Today, lead our design efforts, and get to work on a huge variety of interactive projects. Since 2004, I’ve worked remotely, travelling back to Seattle often for work… a place that still feels like home to me.
I met my partner Mark in the Summer of 2002. He lived in Vancouver, BC while we started dating, so we had a cross-border, long-distance relationship. Sounds difficult, but in practice, it wasn’t too bad for us. After a couple years, we moved to Boston while Mark did year of school. After our time there, we moved back West for a couple years, and lived in downtown Vancouver, BC. Now Mark’s work has taken us to Ottawa, Ontario… so once again, we’re finding our way, settling into a new home.
What does “bravehound” mean?
Back around 2000, I bought a few domain names thinking they sounded cool… thought one day I might use them for a online business or something. When I started a personal geocities site (waaaay back in the day!) I used the bravehound.com domain. People seemed to remember it by name, so I just kept using it when I began blogging in 2003/2004.
When I started playing with mixing house tunes and decided to post some mixes online, I wanted a name that people could track… in case the mp3 file went from here to there, people would know where it came from and where to find more. And when I randomly got called out to “hey… you’re the bravehound blogger guy with the phone, huh?” … I realized it was a sort of silly online alias that had stuck. So I keep it.
There you have it. Or a good chunk of it, anyway.- Andy
