Nokia N82 Vid: Jay Brannan, live in Vancouver

Last month, I got shipped to Vancouver for a weekend work session.  Despite the long hours, I got to see some of my buddies, and catch Jay Brannan when he was passing through town.

I recorded a bit on my Nokia N82, to post and share.  He sang a lot of the song we know and love from his youtube page or myspace page, but also some great covers, too.  The second and third song in in the video are covers - but amazing songs that I came to really love, thanks to his version.

Jay’s also started a blog… check it out.  If you like his songs, support him by buying his tracks on iTunes

welcome to the good life

We’re currently living out in Carleton Place, Ontario.. about an hour away from Ottawa. Setting up shop here has proven to be a bit trying on our patience… finding a place (which we have, but aren’t in yet), finding a new ‘V’ (late october til it’s here) and working on a temporary machine during some massive, late-night work demands… Mark starting an entirely new job, too. Needless to say, all of this was starting to wear on me - both of us - even though we’ve avoided any major distaster.

I saw this video today, and it turned my feelings around. Silly, huh. Sometimes you gotta step back out of a funk, and have a look-see. I got it pretty fucking good. I just forget it on occasion.

Even though Kanye thinks he’s pretty hot shit, I can’t say I disagree. The video is fun, though it’s not as impressive creatively, trailing the amazing D.A.N.C.E. video.

my head is still pounding from last night

A fitting thing to run across in my current state.

Madonna - American Life, Uncensored

For those that don’t remember, right before the American Life single was released, the president announced we were going to war.  Since the original, graphic video (as shown above) was a pretty strong
statement, Madonna decided it was too much and replaced it with a bland (and quite awful) one.  And pretty much everyone understood why it was in good taste to pull it.

I stumbled across it this evening, after forgetting about it for years…  It’s even a more powerful statement now.  And man, artistically… this song was meant to be along with this video.  And maybe people would have more readily felt her campy little rap sequence with this video as the backdrop.

Since YouTube and other video sharing sites weren’t around like they are today, I bet a lot of people never saw the directors cut - complete with the insane, bloody ending.

I’m curious what others feel, seeing this video today.

And as a side note, I still feel this album was severely underrated.  Nothing Fails and Easy Ride are still big favorites.

Rihanna - Umbrella… ella ella eh eh eh.

I’m back-logged on my posts, and I have lots to update, too… but until I sit down and pump those out, have youself a little Rihanna.  Just when I stopped caring about her (S.O.S. was just SO-SO to me, Unfaithful was just Unpleasant), she releases a hot new track (3rd album in 2 years, dang!)

She sounds more like I hoped she would when I first heard her - Caribbean hip hop songstress.  And little more grand than her recent stuff.  Pop singer to pop star.

PS.  Gotta love the Cover Girl lip gloss fruit spritzer plug, too.

Ella.  Eh.

You probably won’t find a song about
market umbrellas but
they can make a good decoration; you’ll need an umbrella stand
to place any large, ornamental
umbrella in, and
you’ll probably want to pick a relatively un-windy place for your
patio umbrella
so that maintaining it isn’t a hassle.

alanis morissette: my humps

Two parts of me… have just become whole.

I love it when she says, "they buy me all these icies."  I love Alanis.  I can’t wait for her next album.

code monkey like fritos.

I’m not a code monkey; I’m a pixel pusher.  But being a tech worker, I feel a oneness with code monkey.

This is another awesome song written and performed by Jonathan Coulton, and someone did a great World of Warcraft video for it (who would have guessed WoW would be used for so many video projects!).  This song is fun and has been in my head all day.

I remember seeing Jonathan’s fun Flickr video (below) a couple years ago… created from random photos he found on the photo sharing site.

Completing a
computer
science program
can help anyone become a code monkey, if that’s their
lifelong dream.

Looks like Cho got some inspiration from Kelly! Love it

Alison Krauss - If I Didn’t Know Any Better

I’ve heard the comment more than once, "Wow, we’re really into different types of music."  House tracks don’t even account for 10% of my library, though.

Long before I loved house music, or found myself shirtless at any boy-boy squishy-squishy circuit event, I had a love for bluegrass tunes. You know the saying.  You can take the boy out of Montana…

And my fav?  Alison Krauss.  Here’s a video off her most recent release  She’s been doing this for what seems like forever, just seems to get better and better.  And damn it, I still haven’t managed to catch her live.  Not that many of my friends would want to tag along to see a show that included fiddles.

jt: bringing sexy back

JT

It’s about damn time. Playful 80s-esque electronic production… a la Timbaland. Right in tune with his work on Nelly Furtado’s great new album. Can’t wait to see this video when it drops next week… the boy can move.
