When I’m putting together a mix set, the only person I’ve taken to sharing it with before it’s done… is Dave. He does quite a bit of desktop mixing, and has a great ear for it. So I’ve asked him to gimme something to share with y’all.

He and I certainly have a fresh perspective when we preview each others’ work, which is great… I love me some funky electro peak hour, he loves him some dark diva drums ‘n echoes. Truthfully, he dabbles in all sorts of sounds, but you can call him a big fat liar if he denies loving his screaming songbirds and bongo layers.

I asked Dave to share some words:

Dave: Andy has been threatening to post one of my mixes for a long time. He’s my best (and worst) critic, so choosing something that he would find tolerable was challenge #1. Challenge #2, perhaps more daunting, was to get comfortable with the fact that people will make decisions about my musical style, skill and artistry (or complete lack thereof) based on this one mix. That was tough for me to get over. When it comes to club music, I can easily swing my purse with the divas one minute and plumb the deepest depths of afterhours the next. So I don’t really have a style, and I guess I’ll have to ask Andy to post a few more mixes at some point to prove that.

In the meantime — you’ll find that this one falls somewhere in the peak-to-afterhours space on the continuum. And it’s old — I did it more than a year and a half ago. So if you’re one of those types who judges a mix based on its inclusion of the very latest, obscure-est, promo-only-est, privatest white-labelest tracks, don’t bother with this one. Anyone else — I’d love to hear your comments, positive and otherwise. Thanks for taking the time to give it a listen. And thanks to Andy for the slick cover art, the encouragement and the bandwidth.

Let him know what you think in the comments!

All- I’ve been listening to Dave, Andy and whoever elses mixes I can get my mitts on for a long time. I’ll attest, to the group of would be listeners that, they are both extemely impressive (armchair) DJs and deserve a few listens at the VERY least.

Dave- This mix a perfect one for Andy to post and probably my favorite of yours. Hope you guys ar great.

Andy- I’m waiting for more my friend. Pure Gold is still in heavy rotation on my iPod but nearing retirement. I suggest you hit up the new Kaskade or Gabriel and Dresden CDs if you need inspiration. Your fan base needs more. Tell Dr. M I said Hello.

Btw… anyone looking for another good mix might want to Google “DJ JST”, I HIGHLY reccomend “Truth”.

Make sure to give me a ring if your ever in NYC.

Dave - Just finished listening to the track and it’s an awesome set! Strong beat throughout…definitely keeps the heart pumping. The strong bongos got me in an Afro-funk train-of-thought (I’m weird that way)…wondering if anyone has sampled something from “Les Nubians” in their mixes????

Andy - Slick graphic…wondering what program you use for your cover art? Seems like the last two have been some sort of vector based program?

    Great job to both!

Dave M doesn’t have any other mixes online, actually. Maybe this will give him encouragement to start putting them out there, though…

Thanks for the comments and keep ‘em coming. I haven’t posted any other mixes, mostly because I’m too lazy to set up a Web site of my own. After all, that’s what Andy’s for… isn’t it?

    @ Jeremy -

Nah, I used photoshop. They’re just simple designs.

  • Boston Boy October 13th, 2006 3:51 pm

    Dave/Andy -

I need my fix!! I’ve been quietly hoping for another mix by Dave M but I can wait in silence no longer. :-)

Please, pretty please, with a cherry on top.
