Nokia BH-800: finally, some decent hardware
I’m using a new bluetooth headset that’s pretty sweet. Now I can comfortably take notes while my boss phones to tell me that the comps I designed and sent him are:
“too red. Do you like red? I don’t know. Red is just so… grrrrr.”
*types the oh-so-constructive feedback, with no cell phone squished between shoulder and ear*
“Red = Grrrrr. Got it.”
The first time I bought a bluetooth headset to use, it was one of those large Jabra bluetooth headsets … it went inside your ear, out in front, did a loop-de-loop over in back of your ear, to a large heavy backside - which was roughly the size of the phone you’re wirelessly trying to connect to in the first place.
Since then, I have tried using other bluetooth headsets, none of which I took to using regularly because they didn’t meet one or more of my 4 requirements:
1. Comfortable enough to wear for an hour long conference call
2. Quick and secure one-handed placement in the ear
3. Decent audio quality and easy-to-find controls (while it’s in your ear)
4. Tiny enough so it’s never a burden to have where you want it (pocket, change holder in the car)
I’ve really enjoyed using the BH-800. Overall, I must say I’m pleasantly surprised with this headset. It
also matches the specific mocha-and-white colors of my N73 phone, too. It’s like my phone gave birth to a baby version of itself. One for my ear.
While headsets over the last couple years have become pretty small, they haven’t always fit me very well. I have flimsy ears (I used to fidget with them when I was reading as a kid), so an equally flimsy ear clip doesn’t stay on so well. This headset has an adjustable - and removable - metal ear loop that makes this thing rock solid on your ear, and is surprisingly comfortable. This is by far a favorite feature, as most small headsets either clip onto your outer ear or have no clip at all. It’s pretty secure without the ear loop, but The whole headset only weighs a negligible 9 grams, which is awesome. It’s got a pretty sexy design to it… as sexy as a bluetooth headset could ever be considered, anyway.
If I had one complaint to make about this headset, I’d say the range could be better. It doesn’t by any means ruin the talking experience, but I did notice it was quick to cut out while I did my usual apartment-wide pacing during a brainstorming meeting. After about 12 feet I started noticing audio interference. While I didn’t experience any discomfort from it, the inner ear speaker might be a bit large for some ears. There isn’t interchangeable end pieces like some in-the-ear headphones now provide - that would have been a nice feature.
Overall, big thumbs up.
I just picked up one of these for my N73, and I’m really loving it as well. Haven’t decided if I’m going to use the ear loop yet: it doesn’t really conform to the shape of my ear, and trying to bend it feels like it might snap in half. Still, love the actual headset itself!
